The New York Times reported on the good work of the National Military Asylum in 1868. Unfortunately, it lauded the great economies practiced in caring for the disabled.

Quite interesting. A comprehensive study of the war’s medical consequences, particularly mental health, would be fascinating to establish the war’s long-term consequences.
