    Monument Square is an early memory and also the end of the July 4th parade before the marching bands competed.

    There are mortars and ships’ guns and a few PARROT RIFLES which were rifled cast iron canons with a steel band around the combustion chamber. Cast iron was cheap and available.
    The steel bands were a specialty of Ulster Iron Works in Saugerties, NY
    The bands were heated and shrunk onto the cast iron, not unlike carriage or locomotive tires.
