On January 20, 1868 The New York Times published its first article on the KKK, which it referred to as the “Kuklux Klan”. Members of the KKK at this time were typically called “Ku Kluxers”, and not “Klansmen.”
The Klan had been founded a year-and-a-half earlier in Pulaski, Tn. The article emphasizes the connection of the Ku Kluxers to the Confederacy, their military form of organization, and their intent on keeping blacks from voting.
