Boston Common’s Civil War Memorial Vandalized

Right before midnight on July 3 camera’s caught six people at Boston’s Civil War monument in Boston Common. By the time they left, there were several red graffiti condemning the United States and calling for an end to support for Israel. The monument was erected in 1877 and was designed by Martin Millmore. The sculptor was an immigrant from Sligo in Ireland. It has become the focus for honoring all veterans from the City of Boston for all wars. It is 127 feet tall and is the tallest Civil War monument in the State of Massachusetts.

Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn, the son of former Mayor Ray Flynn, called the act “disgusting” because it defaced the monument with “antisemitic and anti-American” graffiti. Mayor Michelle Wu condemned the vandalism and had city workers remove the graffiti over the holiday.

Police said they are looking for the vandals who did this. Some were caught on video surveillance.

The sculpture is considered a fine example of 19th Century commemorative art. You can read about it here.
