The House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior rejected yet another year of massive cuts to the National Park Service Budget (NPS) for 2027. The President’s budget was submitted last moth which planned a 30% reduction in staff for the NPS. The subcommittee rejected the sharp reductions for the NPS. The subcommittee still cut funding, but by a much more reasonable amount of 1.3%.
Not everything was good. The committee proposed a $41 million budget cut for historical preservation, for example. It also cuts down to zero the amount appropriated to support states’ efforts to preserve cultural resources. With nearly one-in-four permanent staff either taking early retirement or being fired last year, many National Parks have have been short staffed for nearly a year. In fact, the NPS has been approved to hire an additional six hundred staff to replace those laid off.
Thank you to the dozens of readers who let me know that they called their Congressional Representative to protect our parks.
