Yesterday I posted an attack on U.S. Grant from the political left in which abolition activist Anna Dickinson went after Grant’s supposedly soft support for the rights of African Americans during the 1868 presidential campaign. Here is an equally condemnatory assault from the other direction.
The Wyoming (Pa.) Democrat reprinted this article from the Democratic paper the Harrisburg Patriot. The Patriot was the Democratic paper that five years earlier had panned Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. The “resolutions” the article quotes Grant as endorsing are the civil rights and Reconstruction provisions of the Republican platform.
