The statue of Col. Hans Heg was torn down by a small group of protesters in Madison, Wisconsin in 2020. Last year, a new version of the statue was placed at the state capitol and over the Memorial Day weekend it was dedicated with members of the Union hero’s family present. Among those who joined the dedication was Hans Heg’s great-grandson Major James Patrick Heg.
The Heg statue was torn down following a protest of the killing of George Floyd. Those at the dedication noted that Heg was an abolitionist for whom “Black Lives Mattered.” Heg himself was an immigrant from Norway and a leader of Wisconsin’s large immigrant community before the war. He was killed in battle at Chickamauga in 1863.
