There have long been claims that Sylvester Magee was the last American slave to die. Magee was used by a white supremacist to make the case that slavery was not so bad. In this lecture, Max Grivno argues that Magee was born after the Civil War. Grivno is an associate professor of history at the University of Southern Mississippi.
