An immigrant soldier who served in the Union Army of the Potomac will have his grave dedication on Saturday at Richwood Lutheran Cemetery in Richwood, Minnesota. According to local news reports:
Private Fingal Fingalson, a member of the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment, will have his gravesite dedicated by members of The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and the Lakes Region Veterans Color Guard on July 30 at 1 p.m., according to a news release from the SUVCW.
Fingalson was born in Norway in 1842 and enlisted at age 19 in the Union army with the 2nd U.S. Sharp Shooters Company, attached to the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. In order to be accepted into the sharp shooting company, Fingalson needed to make 10 consecutive hits on a 20-inch target at 200 yards, using fixed iron sights, according to the news release.
He was wounded in battle twice in 1862, with his second injury occurring at Antietam, Maryland.
