Irish Held Captive in Andersonville Prison in Georgia

Damian Shiels is one of the foremost historians of Irish in the American Civil War. In this video he discusses his long-term project investigating the Irish immigrants who joined the Union forces, were captured, and were then sent to Andersonville prison. This is a very interesting lecture.

Dr. Shiels has constructed some great tables where he breaks down the Irish Andersonville populations and their deaths. This includes which county in Ireland they came from, what state they were living in when they entered the army (New York), and what type of civilian work they were engaged in.
