My friend Damian Shiels at Irish in the American Civil War posted this fascinating map from the Census Bureau based on the 1880 enumeration. It shows where Irish immigrants were living in 1880.
The five states and territories with the highest percentages of their population who were born in Ireland are:
1. R.I. 35,281 12.8%
2. Mass. 236,700 12.7%
3. Conn. 70,638 11.2%
4. New York 499,445 9.8%
5. Nevada 5,191 8.3%
Here are the states with the lowest percentages of their populations being born in Ireland, all former Confederate states:
North Carolina 611 0%
Florida 652 .2%
Alabama 2,956 .2%
Mississippi 2,753 .2%
Georgia 4,148 .3%
South Carolina 2,626 .3%
Arkansas 2,432 .3%
Virginia 4,835 .3%
Tenn. 5,975 .4%
Tex. 8,103 .5%
Looking for information about grand uncles who emigrated to New York during the mid to late 19th century. Read that Limerick immigrants settled mainly in Ward 4 in New York City. I would like to know the areas that are in Ward 4
Any help will be most welcome
The Fourth Ward in the mid-1800s was where the southern part of Chinatown is now down to where the Brooklyn Bridge is located. It took in part of the old Five Points.
Here is a link to a map showing the wards in 1867.
