New Historic Marker Commemorates Wild’s Raid by USCT that Freed Thousands of Slaves

A new historical marker in Elizabeth City, North Carolina commemorates the December 1863 raid by United States Colored Troops led by General Edward Wild. According to the Elizabeth City Daily Advance the unveiling last weekend featured USCT reenactors. The raid freed more than 2,000 people illegally held in slavery. Here is an excerpt from an account of the raid from the New York Times of January 9, 1864:
