In 1898 the Redshirts, a White Supremacist paramilitary organization operating in the Carolinas, staged a coup in which they took over North Carolina’s second largest city and expelled many of the leaders of its biracial city government. The coup broke the back of the Black middle class in the city and destroyed efforts to form multiracial alliances for a half-a-century. Reveal, a Public Radio show, does one of the best jobs of retelling this story of racial injustice and political violence.
