I have read many regimental, brigade, and corps histories and I have to admit I was not excited to be reading Eric Michael Burke’s new book on the XV Corps, at least I wasn’t excited until I actually started reading it. This new volume was unique in its approach to telling the story of one of the key components of William Tecumseh Sherman’s forces. Rather than a simple chronology of the XV Corps, Burke closely examines how the experiences of different units in the corps in skirmishes and battles changed the unit’s approach to combat.
