Ulysses S. Grant’s complex relationship with race serves as a useful window to examine the roles of race and racism in nineteenth-century America. At times Grant’s actions and words demonstrated prejudicial, racist views, but at other times his actions and words on race were forward-thinking and advanced for his time. In this program, Park Ranger Nick Sacco (Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site) will examine General Grant’s relationships with African Americans, Native Americans, Jewish Americans, and Chinese Americans throughout his lifetime.
Registration is required for this program at https://bit.ly/GrantTalk. For more information contact events@illinoisstatemuseum.org or (217) 782-5993.
