Video: The Port Royal Experiment Talk by Ranger Chris Barr on How Coastal Carolina Was an Experiment in Black Freedom

Chris Barr is back with a new short video on the “Port Royal Experiment.” This is how Beaufort, South Carolina and the nearby islands were used as an experiment in Reconstruction beginning in 1862 during the Civil War. Enslaved people were living there when Union forces seized the coastal area and the military had to come to terms with the implications of de facto emancipation. Schools were soon established, Blacks were able to own property, and, later, some of the first Black military units of the war were recruited there.
