For about a hundred years, “Plantation Tours” in the South virtually ignored the slaves who made up the vast majority of the people living on the grounds. Tourists were given a “Moonlight and Magnolia” view of the romantic lives of the enslavers, with the black folks whose labor built the great houses and supplied the wealth being consigned to the shadows.
In the last decade or so, some plantations have begun to interpret the lives of slaves as well as of enslavers. Today’s Washington Post explains the negative reaction some white visitors have had to this. In the words of the headline; “Some white people don’t want to hear about slavery at plantations built by slaves.”
The article would be funny if the attitudes were not so sad. You can read it here.
