Historian Heather Cox Richardson gave a talk today at the Brooklyn Historical Society on her new book How the South Won the Civil War which is about how the ideas and prejudices embodied in the Confederacy gradually were mainstreamed in the 20th and 21st Centuries by conservative politicians. Since Brooklyn is under heavy quarantine right now, this is a Zoom meeting. Like most Zooms, this one starts about two minutes in, so don’t freak out if nothing happens until after the two minute mark. Heather Cox Richardson is in high demand right now because she she is a leading historian of how a Republican Party that once defended the rights of immigrants and minorities ended up the way it is now. Richardson looks at the roots of the Party of Lincoln and how it became the Party of Trump. Today’s discussion was even better because her partner on the Zoom is historian Joanne B. Freeman, author of The Field of Blood.
