There is an article that originally appeared on The Conversation which is now getting republished on a number of sites, most recently on Salon. Authored by Tiffany Mitchell Paterson, an assistant professor at the University of West Virginia, the article bemoans the widespread ignorance of Reconstruction by Americans and offers some reasons for studying the first civil rights movement of the 1860s.
