The College of William and Mary in Virginia announced that it is expanding its project documenting the role of slavery at the school. A $1 million grant from the Mellon Foundation will fund research into the important role slaves played in the education of Virginia’s elites.
The project was first demanded by students in 2007 who insisted that the college confront its abuse of African Americans who were enslaved by the school as well as document the school’s support by donors whose fortunes came from the exploitation of enslaved black people.
Ann Marie Stock, vice provost for academic and faculty affairs at William & Mary, told the Washington Post “We were a slave-owning institution — that’s part of our past.”
