Candice Millard is a leading biographer of James Garfield and the author of the 2011 book Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President. She had done an interview with PBS’s American Experience program on April 27, 2015. This interview was conducted for American Experience’s 2016 documentary MURDER OF A PRESIDENT. Her work was also used for the 2025 Netflix mini-series Death By Lighting. Last month, PBS released the interview with Millard. She talks about the plot to murder the president, his care by his doctors, and his death, but she also details his life as a college professor, his generalship in the Civil War, and his actions during Reconstruction.
