Breathing Democracy Into Spaces: The 1st South Carolina Volunteers of African Descent Event April 8, 2023

The University of South Carolina Beaufort’s (USCB) Institute for the Study of the Reconstruction Era is offering a free program on April 8, 2023 on the 1st South Carolina Volunteers of African Descent, a Black regiment formed in 1862. The program will begin at 9:00 AM and last until 3:00 PM at 805 Carteret St. Beaufort , SC 29902.

The 1st South Carolina Volunteers of African Descent – A fight for freedom and the Nation

Share in a day of discovery and learning! Teachers, scholars, and historians will present lessons and share the inspirational stories that illuminate the legacy of the 1st regiment of soldiers of African descent whose contributions and impact during the Civil War paved the way for thousands of other Black men to take up arms to secure freedom for themselves, their families, their communities, and the nation.

  1. Will this be a zoom or video conference of some sort also for people who live far away and are unable to attend? And if it is can it be archived for future student use for learning and research? Sounds really great I will look through your archives public history teacher and social studies department chair so this ties in perfectly with the state of Ohio 8th grade social studies history curriculum!! I am with the oluntangy local school district North of Columbus Ohio
