Rachel Powell, Leader of Gettysburg Occupation, Gets Nearly Five Years in Jail

Rachel Powell, who was a leader in the far-right occupation of Gettysburg on July 4, 2020, has been sentenced to nearly five years in jail for her role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. According to the New York Times, “Judge Royce C. Lamberth of U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia sentenced Ms. Powell to 57 months in prison and 36 months of supervised release…” She was convicted on all nine charges filed against her.

On January 6 Powell was seen urging on the mob to storm the Capitol through her bull horn, then taking an ax to break the windows of the building. She was heard telling the rioters that they should; “probably coordinate together if you’re going to take the building.” n affidavit filed by an FBI agent says that in video of the assault, Powell “is clearly seen speaking though a bullhorn and giving very detailed instructions about the layout of the Capitol building” to those who had broken in.

She took to social media several days later to tell her followers that “They didn’t open the gates. The people trampled them. It was war.”

After the attack on the Capitol, Powell became known as the “Woman in the Pink Cap” as police and the FBI hunted her.

On July 4, 2020, Rachel Powell participated in an armed occupation of Gettysburg which involved Neo-Nazis, Confederate groups, and far-right “militias.”
