Dr. Martin Luther King’s Speech on the Emancipation Proclamation During the Centennial of the Civil War

1961 to 1965 the nation commemorated the Centennial of the Civil War. While many events presented over those four years were celebrations of white bravery and brilliantly fought battles, those trying to fulfill the promise of the Civil War brought up the cause of the fighting, slavery, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, and the post-war Reconstruction Amendments to the Constitution. On September 12, 1962 the New York Civil War Centennial Commission held its Emancipation Proclamation Observance in New York City. Dr. Martin Luther King gave the following speech at the event:
