Family of KKK Leader General John B. Gordon Asks that His Statue Be Removed in Atlanta

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the family of Ku Klux Klan leader and Confederate general John B. Gordon be removed from the grounds of the Georgia state capitol in Atlanta. Forty-four of Gordon’s descendants signed a letter to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp demanding the statue’s removal. According to the letter, the “primary purpose of the statue was to celebrate and mythologize the white supremacists of the Confederacy…The continuing presence of this statue on public property serves to negate and undermine the past and ongoing struggle of Georgians to overcome and reverse the legacy of slavery and oppression of black Americans.”

The presence of the statue of the former governor has long been controversial in Atlanta and it has become a target of protesters in recent weeks.
