“Harriet” Opens to Very Good Audience Reception & Good Ticket Sales

Box Office for the new Harriet Tubman biopic “Harriet” has exceeded expectations. The film opened Friday in 2,059 theaters nationwide and grossed $12 million over the three-day weekend period. The film was competitive in ticket sales with the blockbuster film Joker this weekend.  The film was expected to gross $7.5 to $9 million dollars.

The film received media reviews ranging from lukewarm to excellent, but audience reaction has been extremely enthusiastic. The film got a 97% positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest audience score among top grossing movies this week.

The demographics of those going to the film have been unusual. Most filmgoers tend to be young, but those going to Harriet have spanned the age spectrum. 40% were in the under 35 year-old bracket, with 60% being older. A fill 40% were over 45.

The film also drew a racially diverse audience. 49% of the audience was black, 36% White, 8% Hispanic, with people classified as Asian or Other buying 7% of the tickets.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Harriet‘s top five-grossing theaters were in Harlem, Atlanta, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Washington, D.C.”
