“Never Mind the Guide” The NY Times Advice When Visiting Gettysburg in 1888

On July 9, 1888 the New York Times published a guide to seeing the Gettysburg Battlefield entitled “Never Mind the Guide.” I heard about the article while listening to Tim Smith, an expert on the history of Gettysburg, on the podcast Addressing Gettysburg. Of course, 1888 was the 25th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and given that the report was filed a few days after the ceremonies marking the anniversary, it is likely that the reporter was on-site for the mass visits by veterans and tourists.
