We don’t often get the full scope of reasons for opposing the recruitment of Black soldiers. This is the view from the Journal of Commerce a Peace Democrat paper based in NYC. It was reprinted in the Wilmington Journal from North Carolina.

  1. Nothing that surprising, the Democrats, and especially the peace wing of the Democratic party, ran on racial resentment as their best issue. Utilizing African American troops made a negotiated peace that much less likely, and they understood the civil status of African Americans would be dramatically changed by participation in a victorious Union war.
