Platform of the Virginia Conservatives April 1869 “setting forth the policy of the white people of the state”

This platform was adopted by the Virginia Conservative Party on April 29, 1869. The Conservatives were a party made up of Democrats and old Whigs as part of a fusion party of anti-Republicans. It was the dominant white party for a decade. You can find out more about the Conservatives here.

The platform states that the Conservatives are the party of white people and that the State of Virginia was formed by whites and that the state should be “subject to the control” of whites. The platform calls for Virginians to unite with political organizations in other states committed to keeping governmental power “under the control of the white race.” The party stood opposed to “negro suffrage, negro office-holding, and…negro social equality.”
