“Stony the Road” by Henry Louis Gates Named a “Must Read Book” by Time Magazine

Henry Louis Gates’s Reconstruction book Stony the Road was named one of Time Magazine’s “Must Read Books of 2019.” Here is what Time says about the book:

In the years since the debate over what to do with Confederate monuments swept the United States, it has become clearer than ever that we are still living in the aftermath of the Civil War. Historian and public intellectual Henry Louis Gates, Jr. underlines that point by turning his lens on the period that followed the war, when equal rights expanded alongside backlash to that idea. In Stony the Road, Gates draws on images of white supremacy to show how deep American racism—and resistance to it—can go.

Here is my review of the book.
