Pursuant to new policies adopted in Texas barring “Critical Race Theory” a working group set up by the state has advised that what used to be known as the slave trade now be called “involuntary relocation” in early grades in school. When the proposal was presented to the State Board of Education this week it drew harsh criticism. Attorney Ben Crump accused the group of trying “to erase this deeply horrific time period.” Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy claimed that Republicans of refusing to use the word slavery.
I grew up in a time long ago when the history of African Americans was marginal in my elementary school classes. But even sixty years ago, we knew that slavery existed in our country before Lincoln. Even my most conservative teacher used the word “slave trade” to describe the buying and selling of human beings.
The recommendation that “involuntary relocation” be used was clearly an attempt to lie about our nation’s past so that new generations will not be able to identify white supremacy or the lasting impacts it has had on American society.
