The White League Arms for Battle as Its Coup Draws Near

In September 1874 the City of New Orleans and nearby parishes saw the signs of an approaching military conflict. Street battles would not begin until September 14, but preparations were clearly underway. One indication that fighting was nigh was the clandestine shipments of arms arriving in the city.

The White League continued outreach to new communities in the weeks leading up to the coup. Not all of the campaigns were successful if this article from a newspaper opposed the League is to be believed.

White League killings were on the increase in August and September. A massacre of Republican officials and their Black supporters in Coushatta, northwest of New Orleans, claimed the lives of between 11 and 26 people. This notice from the state’s Republican governor sought information from the public to help bring the killers to justice.
