U.S. Grant Pistols Sell for $5.17 Million at Auction

A pair of engraved pistols presented to Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War sold for $5.17 million at an auction in Rock Island, Illinois this week. The price paid was nearly double what the boxed set was expected to bring in. The pistols were engraved by L.D. Nimschke, a well-known master engraver and they feature grips with Grant’s portrait on them.

The pistols are believed to be the most expensive firearms sold at auction possessed by Grant.
