USCT Union Officer Buried in Arlington This Week

Union Army Maj. Isaac Hart was buried in Arlington National Cemetery earlier this week. His was the first new burial of a Civil War veteran in many years according to the Department of Defense. Hart’s remains were found recently forgotten in storage at a Cincinnati cemetery.  Hart was a 22 year old New Bedford teamster at the start of the war. He enlisted in the army on April 14, 1861, the day after the Civil War began. He mustered into the 3rd Massachusetts, a 90 day regiment. In September of that year he joined the 23rd Massachusetts as a First Sergeant. In June of 1862 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant.

In January 1864 he was promoted to captain in the 2nd United States Colored Cavalry. He would continue to serve with that Black cavalry unit until February, 1866 by which time he had been breveted a major.

The photo below shows the family of Major Hart being presented with the flag from the casket.
