According to the National Constitution Center: “2026 marks the 150thth anniversary of the contested election of 1876. Three renowned scholars join to discuss the election, its aftermath, and how we think about Reconstruction and define its endpoint: Robert D. Bland, associate professor of history at the University of Tennessee; Pamela Brandwein, professor of political science at the University of Michigan; and Gregory P. Downs, professor of history at the University of California-Davis.”
These academic experts consider what happened in the Election of 1876 and whether it really ended Reconstruction.
