The National Museum of Civil War Medicine has embarked on a $3.5 million revamp of its galleries. The museum in Frederick, Maryland is thirty years old and this is the first museum-wide update. The museum in a 200 year old building at 48 E. Patrick St. is still open, with only one out of the nine galleries being closed at this time. In 2027 the museum will close from mid-March until mid-May.
The museum attracts 30,000 visitors every year and it is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Frederick. While the museum attracts Civil War students, the redesign will make it more interesting to children and students of medical history. Modern military medicine got its start during the Civil War and the leadership of the museum believe that they can attract more visitors by making the exhibits accessible to both the Civil War community and a broader set of medical professionals, casual tourists, and children.
