Part 4: A Whole Passel of Books from Fordham on Reconstruction and the Civil War

As I keep digging I keep finding more and more free books being offered by scholarly presses on the Civil War and Reconstruction Era. These history books have been made available for free download or reading online through Project Muse.  Just click on the title of the book and the link will take you to the free book. The books on the Freedmen’s Bureau and freedpeople’s schools are all first rate.

If you have never downloaded from Project Muse, I provide an easy explanation of how to do so at the bottom of this list.

By the way, if you want to find all the free Civil War and Reconstruction Era books I have found so far, just click the Tag “free books” at the bottom of the page.

    • Using the Free Books:

If you follow the links to the free books you will see something like this:

Beneath the description of the book you will see “Table of Contents.”

Each chapter is a separate download. You click on the download and you can read the chapter online. You can also save the download onto your device. Ignore the “Save” button on the Project Muse page, though, it saves the chapter to your Muse cloud, which you probably don’t have.

Good luck and I will be back with more free books tomorrow.
