Why Does Alan Dershowitz Wrongly Say that Previous Impeachments Have Not Had Witnesses? Johnson’s Definitely Did

When asked about the possibility that there will be no witnesses at the Senate trial of Donald Trump, Alan Dershowitz said today on NPR that “previous impeachments have had no witnesses.” Since there have only been two previous presidents put on trial following impeachment, disproving this claim is easy. During the trial of President Andrew Johnson in 1868 there were 25 prosecution and 16 defense witnesses. Those called to testify included General William Tecumseh Sherman and the Interim Secretary of War Lorenzo Thomas.
