The Louisiana White League Formed July 1874

The White League was officially organized on July 1, 1874. It served as a combination radical white supremacist political organization and a militia successor to the Ku Klux Klan. I have seen references to the group in Louisiana newspapers in June, 1874, but the leader of the group, former Confederate Colonel

Fred Ogden, leader of the White League.

Fred Ogden, put its official birthday as July 1. The group would soon be fomenting violent street battles to end Black voting in New Orleans. On September 14, 1874, it would spearhead the so-called Battle of Liberty Place.

Below is a report on the founding convention of the White League. The platform of the new terrorist group criticized African Americans for not acknowledging the “superiority” of whites in ability to rule.
